Test patch E7 + E7 DEDI (now E8)

Hello again racers.

EDIT : updated to E8 - minor changes (lower limits on sliders, updated translatable text)

Full information is provided below the download links, but if you already know about E4, E5 and E6 patches, the main changes in E7 are :

The old keyboard steering has now been removed, leaving "no help" and "stabilised".
E7 hosts only accept connections from E7 guests.
E7 guests can see a "K" in the list of games - new version with less keyboard help.

This is a controversial change which brings out a lot of strong opinions, but the idea is to improve LFS for everyone, whether they use a wheel, a mouse or a keyboard. Keyboard users should find the new steering more interesting and involving to use, while analogue users will pleased that the playing field has been levelled, and keyboard users will have to be careful driving on kerbs and grass and more wary of impacts with other cars.

More information, taken from the README file :

This patch can improve frame rate significantly if you have a high end
graphics card. This is achieved by making use of Hardware Vertex
Shading. In old versions, this could be attempted by turning on "HTL"
but the performance was poor because of a flaw or bug. The new version
is known as "HVS" and can be turned on or off in Options...Graphics but
to see the effect you will need to restart LFS. HVS is switched on by
default when you run this patch, if your card supports it.

Z buffer depth is now selectable in Options...Graphics as well, also
needing LFS to be restarted.

A new graphical feature is included - Haze effect. This is a light
fog which improves the graphics and depth perception. It's possible
that it may not work well on some graphics card / driver combinations.

NOTE : when HVS is used, "simple car" and "simple track" will cause a
reduction in frame rate because they do not take advantage of HVS.
So these options are not recommended and will be switched off when you
run the patch for the first time.

These options are saved in a special cfg file, "card_cfg.txt"

In addition, the old keyboard steering system has been replaced by two
new keyboard steering systems, "no help" and "stabilised".

These are intended to improve the LFS experience for keyboard racers, by
making the steering less helped and so more interesting to drive. And
to improve LFS for wheel / mouse drivers as well by providing fairer
racing. Keyboard users must be much more careful about skid control now
than before.

The two keyboard steering systems in this test patch are :

"no help" - keyboard steering translates directly to physical steering.
the user can steer too far, forcing the car to understeer.

"stabilised" - the steering range is limited to help keep it within the
useful steering range, and some automatic skid correction is provided.
The user must take action to prevent a skid, because the skid correction
is not perfect (although it is predictable).

You can still use keyboard, and it's still not that hard... I advise you to buy a steering wheel.

Good bye LFS.

my $20, and my 5000+ miles raced online, have been completely wasted.

I appreciate the game you made, and all the hard work you 3 put into it.

I spent a year being able to race well in LFS with my crappy PC and KB, I will not start over again.

I Never wanted to be able to "Compete" with the real Sim Racers, all I wanted to ever do, was race with MY friends, and now, that is not fun. because if I touch the grass, I spin.....every single time.....

Thanks again, hope you reconsider putting that option back in, and allowing servers to put a filter on, so servers can decide. That way, my friends and I can continue playing.

Sorry to see you guys go. But can't believe how some people are stubburn about this, the devs work hard and you guys are just pissing on their work. No one is telling you to use the new patch. You and your friends can still use the old patch. I'm sure you guys can organize a little group that wants to play with the old E patch.

Scawen and Co. Good job, you guys really work hard to keep everyone happy, I'll be sure to pay more money once I get enough

STOP WHINING!

Buy a joystick instead then. Or realise, that you learnt the old method pretty good, what's to stop you learning the new one? I admit I don't have the room for a wheel - but I intend to buy one when I move house. Until then, I will practise, if I don't get the hang of it, I'll try the mouse (again). If I still don't like it, I could get a cheap joystick. The are many alternatives to kb. All games drive different with kb anyway - I don't see the problem.

Some people give in to easy. Try it, you might like it.

Anyway, time to practise with E7.

Ehm... any chance for an option to ban keyboard/mouse users alltogether from a server? (Joystick is ok, I guess, since it will be impossible to see the difference between that and a wheel.)

Ok, a continuation from E6 for sdsdad's problems:

sdsdad, how's your progress with the graphics glitches?

The amount of ram memory used for AGP should be about half of your total available ram. For example, if you have 512mb of ram, you can set the AGP apature size to 256mb in bios. I think that's what it's called. If you set it too high, your computer might not work right. I've got 768mb of ram, and if I set the amount for AGP to 512mb, my computer won't even start, kind of goofy but also a reminder not to just throw it up to 512mb if you've got 512mb or ram. It's just there to help out the video card memorywise. It's only a performance issue and shouldn't affect your problem. Still, play with it if you want.

My main suggestion still exists, try running it cooler. It could be possible that the card isn't quite perfect either. It could have been a bad one that sqeezed through inspection or on the lower end of the passable level. This means it could be more prone to heat problems or general running even at normal clock speeds. I'll use my card as an example.

I have a 9500 non-pro built on the same board as the 9800 cards. With good ram and some luck with quality, I could be able to actually modify the board through software to a 9800 pro. This is kind of a hit or miss thing. About half the cards work and the other half don't. Modding it through software opens up the unused pipelines and overclocks the ram and processor(video card) to the 9800 pro level. A select few can achieve this. Others are only able to open up the pipelines and allow for some overclocking. At least one of my extra pipelines was bad and prevented me from modding my card to a 9800. Also, mine doesn't have high speed ram. This only allows me to overclock a little bit.

The variation in quality as these boards are produced sets them appart. Mine was more towards the lower end of the quality spectrum. Even while not overclocked, I get heat issues at times. I'll get the polygon stretching and cpu overheating on rare occations. I shouldn't, but I do. I think sometimes about sending it back even. I assume you're in the same boat as me. You don't have much choice other than to keep things as cool as possible or upgrade and invest in another video card.

Drivers and settings seem to fix the problem, but I think it's more of an issue of how hard your video card is running with those particular drivers/settings. For example, when I run 6xAA, I can hardly overclock at all. I am more prone to graphics glitches too, although still very rare. I can overclock quite a bit at 2xAA, but 4xAA forces me to clock down considerably. It shows how much work is done by the card and how much heat builds up. If I run it in a cooler room, I can overclock more. If I run at my friends house, very warm, my computer might overheat and freeze my computer at times, even when not overclocked. It's very temperature sensitive.

I really hope that this is a good decision..
Are laptimes so important? Because I think that it doesn't matter if I'm 1st or 23553th on the chart, if I am able to get good races. And I think that good races will be a problem if the keyboarders have a class of their own, from 1 to 5 seconds slower per lap than the wheelers. Tested, proven.
I am thankful for all the work you are doing, but I also think that good battle is more important than laptimes.

I'm not going to leave, even if I'm 5 seconds slower in Blackwood than the wheelers. With a good setup. And no, I'm not going to buy a wheel before I get money for it.

I didn't say that. I just explained my thought, that we will have some "division-style" racing, with the wheelers in front, and kb'ers in the back. And that is not good for racing.
