Racer v0.5.0 beta 7 released. [forum post: 456862]

I've just uploaded Racer 0.5.0 beta 7.

Get it at: http://racer.m4driving.sm/beta/rr050b7.exe.
The file is about 9Mb.

Caveats:
- Only the Fer312 is included. Hope you update those cars soon!
- Carlab's rod painting is largely unsupported/not working. You can have some fun and see the frontal instant center/roll center calculations though.

Enjoy!
Ruud

-------------
v0.5 beta 6/7
-------------

Beta 6 was Mac-only. To avoid confusion over features, beta 6
was never released on the PC.

Incompatibilities:
- Rollcenter used to add the suspension position. This didn't seem
that logical so the addition is now gone (!). This means that
for every car.ini, you need to retweak the roll center. To get
pre-beta6 behavior, add susp.x/y/z to susp.roll_center.
This now makes the rollcenter's base the nullpoint.
- Track and car id's must be used from now on.
- SGI release has been dropped.

Fixes:
- Fixed telemetry; CG height was calculated incorrectly.
- Fixed automatic shifting; wasn't running.
- Fixed magic drive bug; when one side of the car had a
lower suspension Y coordinate, the car would start to
drive by itself. Also had some impact on weight transfer.
- Fixed weight transfer bugs (all directions)
- Fixed anti-pitch weight transfer bugs
- Fixed track popup objects
- Fixed bug in automatic shifting; erratic downshifting.
- Fixed spline offset bug; small fluctations from poly to poly.
- Several small fixes & enhancements.

Features:
- FMOD updated to v3.6 (all platforms).
- JPEG files now accepted on Windows/Linux/Mac. Note that JPEG
does not support alpha channels. Also don't use colorkeying
in JPEG images; JPEG is too lossy for that to work.
- Telemetry now fully functional onscreen.
- POV following; see racer.ini (controls.pov_follow); allows head yawing
to follow the steering wheel motion in car cameras.
- Helicopter camera view. Press C twice.
- Audio system upgraded to cache samples with the same filename.
- Car selection now sorts by name
- Car selection has 2 more lines: credits & comments
- Roll center debug displaying improved.
- Low-LOD steering wheel possible (steer.model_low) for outcar views.
- View elements can now be tilted; view.elt.xa (and ya, za)
- Linux version now has working fullscreen.

:'( [forum post: 456905]

Hey Ruud, great job!

i am soo happy for all the folks out there with PCs.... they are getting a hell of an update and the game, i am sure, isbetter than ever.

now, not wanting to spoil the fun of those PC people... but is there any chance teh MAC version will get a further update. I must say i am being a little cry baby, though. since I joined ther Racer community there have been 2 updates (actually 1 release and 1 update) for the mac and now there has been 2 for the PC.

BUT, the B6 was a pre-release it still had not fixed weight shift issues, it has keyboard bugs, it has loads of other minor issues which have made me rever back to driving in B4. Now, from this update with JPGs etc. i can see most things (tracks/cars) not being compatible with the mac version which does not support this file format....

i know, i know i am being a cry baby, afterall, Mac Racer is still and amazing game... i am just worried about the bugs and compatibility issues....

Once again, Ruud, thank you for your project, for your work and for this amazing game!

cheers,
fabs

It's great to have some work to do on the car.ini's but one thing puzzles me. why are sound played in Racer now echoed in infinity? The starter (Ryan's GT500), shift sounds, shift miss etc.

Open Racer ini in Racer's main folder look for "audio" section and "type=" and set "type=winmm"

BTW it seams Racer 7 refuse to play some recorded sounds (the sound i made for the Alpine make Racer hanging), is there new limitations?

And Jim, please, if you have time for that, could you write us a little tut with a "before and after beta7" section to explain us how to tweak inis to get them beta7 compatible? I don't understand well the differences between the two versions.

Nice of the forums to come back to life .

Anyhow, I've only tried the 312 and it has a very 'planted' feel to it, like it's making solid contact with the ground. From what I recall from past betas, it was pretty much undriveable. It understeers when the wheel is cranked, whereas I thought the GP cars suffered from oversteer(?). Anyhow, I'm really curious now as to how the handling of other cars will be affected, no doubt the results will be a solid improvement all round. Thanks, Rudd .

I've already posted this once, I'm assuming the original was
lost in the forum crash, if this is not the case and the message
was deleted (admins) please email me.
Attached you will find my most recent version of the Honda
S2000 ini. What's strange is the same ini works well in both
beta 5 and beta 7.
Ruud,I really like the changes you've made in the suspension.
Any idea when Carlab's new suspension editing will be functional
and is there any way to change the friction level on the body so
that the car will tumble instead of merely sliding?

something is WELL stuffed with sound, every time i shift, it "drops" the sound on that part of the map, and it sits there repeating forever, converting cars over isn't real easy either (yes i know about id and version, before someone jumps down my throat) on the upside, the grip seems better, i changed the helicopter sound for the one off sega rally

That's true, even with unchanged inis (evo6) i can feel better reactions while understeering oversteering braking, etc..
With better fitted ini, this one will be a blast.

Weird with those sounds. You may try and find all your FMOD.dll files on your system, and replace it with the latest from http://www.fmod.org
Here, it works; no looping shifts, and the source code reflects this. However, the loop is turned on by default, then turned off later; perhaps H/W accelerated sounds suffer? (try turning sound acceleration to the lowest setting; I only have a measly SB16 something doing everything in software).

This version is really a test for the understeer; I know the Fer312 understeers, but I'm not really a good setupper, so I'm not sure if it's just springs or brake bias or dampers. It does seem to have a braking capacity that is twice as much as it should be (too quick to lock).

So the best test is then (since the math does seem ok) to see how other cars are doing, and you all can be a great help in that. Apart from the understeer, I like the way the Fer312 drives, though a bit sensitive, but that may also be due to the engine sound being very low; at 120 km/h, it still sounds like you're just cruising.

I do like the way the Fer312 handles on the (admittedly old) Oval1. Very smooth and you can feel (and hear) the grip go away when you're on the edge of max. speed.

If this version works out ok (and I get the sound fixed somehow) and it does seem like the understeer is just a Fer312 peculiarity, I'm close to getting v0.5 final out, so I can do a good Linux and Mac update as well.
