Cool Formula Two Images

Well, I think they are but of course I am a bit biased. These are mostly from 67-68 pre-wings. F2 (1600cc engines) then had its own seperate series that allowed the very best Grand Prix drivers - Clark, Hill, Stewart, Surtees, Rindt et to compete in both on different dates. The F1 GP races were supported with a F3 (1000cc) preliminary race.

There is something about the proportions of the F2 cars in this period that is very attractive. I think it's the proportion of the tires - they are smaller diameter than their F1 bigger brothers but not too skinny - giving them the cars a beefier look than F Junior/F 3/ F Ford cars. Shots of these Chevron, Lola and Matra makes are pretty rare. Enjoy - -

That was a Lola T-100 (I think).

This next one is a Lotus 48 (pretty sure).

Winkelmann Racing Brabham BT23C (Cosworth FVA). Think the driver is Rees. Team mate was Rindt who dominated F2 in '67 and '68 in BT 23's.

OK, next we have for you today a Chevron (B 15?) F2. Very few of these were made, which is a shame because they are a good car and good looking. Shape of the intake reminds me of the McLaren M5A a bit . . .

Matra (make anyone? MS7?) - I think this is the same one Jackie Ickx amazed the racing world by qualifying 3rd ahead of Stewart, Brabham and others in the 1967 German Grand Prix (some of you will know this from seeing the Ringmasters recently).

Running out of F2s (well almost). Here is a Lotus 42 F3. Unusual to see Norfolk machine in red. The Lotus 41 is a very pretty car in F2 form (Jackie Oliver drove one in '66 and '67).

While we're at it I am posting this great shot of a '66 Cooper T 82 F2 (1000cc) that was photograped by Badly Drawn Boy at Silverstone at last weekend's HSCC meet. Just love the look of this car, especially the "cab forward" lines.

PS - BDB if you are reading this and have a larger format/hi res digital pic (e.g. 1020x etc) - or any others of this car - I would love to have a copy for my desktop.

Yes, these are really beautiful race cars. My dad used to be a F3 mechanic of a local Swiss driver in the early 70's.

Greetings

Double drool , I used to watch these cars race at Outlon.

they made for close fought racing and lots of overtaking, the then European F2 seriies was something else.

Just imagine guys 30 0dd of these beauts at Hockenhiem,Monza Pau etc.(pre chicane)

Good thing was it allowed up and coming drivers to race alongside the stars of the day.

Do any of the 1 litre cars use the Cosworth SCA Engine? I used to have one in a March 703 and that was a blast to drive. IIRC the SCA was redlined at 11k and would really scream. I forgot to put in my ear plugs before a qualifying session once. (A very painful mistake I made only once.) My hearing has never quite been the same since.

Thanks for posting the photos. I love the F2/F3 cars from that era.

Argos - I am not a Cosworth expert but the SCA 1 ltr I think was the eminent F3 engine. Narrow power band, high revs gave it the popular name "screamer". My BT21 was oringinally one before it was converted like many to F2 spec. The reason Formula Ford was started in the late 60's was because the Russell and other racing school students kept blowing up the highly tuned, expensive SCA engines!

When I see those I just have one regret. I was too young when my father had the occasion to make a few laps with one like that (a F2) in France arounf 69-70.
Was a 3 years old child.
Only remember a few things. The LOUD noise (always impressive for young kids) and the starter was a button. Car was white...

Maybe it is why I've always been facinated by this generaton of cars.

Why didn't we have vid-cams in the 60's...

As far as I can remember........
SCA = single cam A series used Ford cortina 4 pots and 3 main bearings.
For f3 only single carb alowed best "screamer" used double choke weber dcoe 40 with one half blocked off, fitted on downdraft inlet. rpm at end of series was 12-13000
rpm.
the high cost was due to having rebuilds every race as the engine did one race one practise if u were lucky.
F2 version was less restrictions on inlet side and could use twin cam head. twin choke carbs later with injection.

Nice pictures, Expat. They'll be invaluable if someone decides to make an F2 carset.

Funny you should mention that, I'm pretty close (within a few days) to re-releasing John Hinkle's F3 carset, with Karsten Borchers' car textures. Here's a preview:
