Happy Speeds in Gears

Please see post #24 for yet another bug fix. (sigh)
See post #22 - Fix for Lotus gearbox.
Please see post #19 for a new version with a small bug fix. Thanks
It's ready! See post #13 for download link.

Update: Added the Ramps & Clutches. With the locking factor calculated & displayed. See new pic

The program is out to the beta testers.
So it should be ready soon.

What it can do:
Read gear info from a setup file i.e. monza.fe1
Let you select from the gear sets availble in the 65mod
Show the speed range covered by each gear for a RPM range
The RPM range is set to match the engine but is user changeable
Show the drop in revs for an upshift
Write the new gear info back to the setup file.

What it can't do:
Create a new setup file.
It is code I plan to add.
But the file handling code will probly exceed the speed/gear code in size

So for now use copy/rename for different versions of a setup.

Here's a pic:

Cool idea Strava

Love your Avatar, do you own that slot-car?

When I was a kiddie (4 or 5yo) my parents bought myself and my brother an old tea chest full of scalectrix (sp?) track and another full of cars in various states of decline. One of the cars that did work was what I now know to be a dark green Brabham BT20, man I loved that car I wish I still had that today.

Cheers, Buk

Yup. That is one of my 1/32 scale slot cars. A 1968 BRM. It had little nose winglets. But they looked funny and I wanted to pretend is was a 67. So I cut em off
It's stable mate is a 67 Eagle

I have been adding some user friendly type code to the prog.
It now remembers the last folder you opened and all of the other settings.
If you change the rev range that is also saved for each car.

About doubled the size of the code
And I still need to add 'save as' capability

File 'save as' function added.
So now you can open an existing file.
Change the gear box.
And save it as a new name.

Just waiting on the Beta testers now.......

Final version is out to the Beta testers.
Added a few features such as display in MPH or KPH.
Added code to prevent the prog from blowing up if you opened a 67 file.
(you are not supposed to do that. the gear sets for 65 & 67 are quite different)
Added more file handling 'safety net' code.
So it is harder (but still not impossible to do something stupid.

Light Bulb

I tested an early version.....here's my experience with it

the day I tested, I had not yet driven the 65 F1 BRM, but picked that car, figuring sorting the 6 speed would be a good test.....I had been in some online races with a few fast BRM drivers, so I knew what a decent BRM time was at Kyalami.....after only an hour of plugging in gear sets, diff ratios, and on track testing, I ran a 1:26.15, and am confident of reaching 25's.....I figure that wasn't too bad for only having an hour of BRM seat time.....this jewel of a program made it much easier to see the effect of different gear sets and diff ratios, speed and rpm range, revs drop, etc.....seeing the locking factor is a great help too.....it got me on the track with a decent setup faster and with much less trial and error.....highly recommended

Great idea
Can you tell me what the locking factor tells me?
Thanks

Street cars have an open diff. zero% locking. The wheels are free to turn at different speeds. Get one wheel on ice and it spins while the other wheel does nothing.

GoKarts & dragsters have a solid axel. 100% locked. If you spin the rear wheels they both spin at once. Snap oversteer.

GPL has a limited slip diff. The wheels can turn at different speeds but only up to a point. then they start locking together. How fast & how much they lock depends on the ramps & clutches in the diff.

Less locking it is easier to spin the inside wheel, loose acceleration but keep going straight.

More locking it is easier to spin both wheels at once. For a nice drift or a spin depending on your throttle control skills

Speeds In Gears is Ready

Inside the zip is a file called ReadMe_Gears.txt
It contains instructions for installation and use of the prog.
I also added a Help screen. I used a lot of graphic elements that I hope you will find helpful

Please see post #19 for new version.

Found a Bug :(

Well Darn! In spite of all our testing a small bug made it thru.
The Min RPM setting for the BRM was not being saved correctly and would always revert back to the default value.
This has been fixed

Please delete your V1.0.3 install and get V1.0.4 here:

See post #22 for version 1.0.5

A note on changing the Max/Min RPM values:
Make sure you press the Enter Key after making a change.

I coded it this way so the red bars would not jump around as you entered numbers. Had I allowed it to react to any change event the bars would have jumped to 7 then 70 then 700 then 7000 as you typed 7 0 0 0.
Made it tuff to get a visual on how big a change you had made.

Nice little utility you've made there.

One thing though, the Lotus 33 has 5 gears.

Red,

That is correct.
Three cars have only 5 speeds : Lotus, BT11 and Ferrari.

Version 1.0.5

The Lotus is a 5 Speed?
Why, so it is!

I guess you can just ignore that 6th gear, pretend it's not there.

OR

Delete V1.0.4 and download V1.0.5 here:
Please see post #24 for V1.0.6

Sorry about that. Maybe I need some new Beta Testers

It does explain why things were not lining up when I tried to convert the prog to the 67 gearsets.

This is a wonderful utility! It's helping me punch out a lot of setups in a short time. It'll take me days to test them all

BUT, I found another bug.

When I select File > Open, if I change my mind and click Cancel, the program crashes instead of returning me to the control panel. I keep forgetting it's there and I've done it at least six times.

Edit again: This still appears once in a while in v1.05, but no longer every time like in v1.04. Now it seems to happen only after doing a Save As. Saw the following error message: "Run-time error '32755': Cancel was selected."

Thanks for reporting the bug mikkonarhi.
32755 is the code returned when you hit the cancel button.
And I was not handling it correctly in certain cases.
I also found and fixed a few other holes in my file handling logic.

Please get V1.0.6 here

Speeds in GearsV1.0.6

My apologies for so many bug fix releases.
I am an old (very old ) programmer.
And the linear style of coding i did so much of so many years ago is quite different from the code behind a GUI interface. Where little snips of code are associated with each object (button , text box etc) and can be executed at anytime. It is taking me a bit to adapt. I may burn out my last few functioning synaps before I am done
