BAPOM Releases #304-#305
Word up, y'all!
Two new ones for you. Of course, since Sergio and Von Honka tastefully contracted out to the BAPOM Design Studios & Waste Management Corporation, you've already seen them by now. Or you should have, at any rate. Release Notes: Hondala - A little bit of '20s German Modern design. The cover is a fairly literal rip-off of a 1929 Mercedes-Benz poster (attached). In my defense, I originally drew this cover (with different text) over two years ago for the Schottenring track. (Which was originally going to be a modern 'historic festival' event - when it became a period 1967 track, the cover wouldn't work, and it's been sitting in the 'should use this one day' pile since then.) Anyway, my point is that since this cover was drawn, I've gotten better at coming up with original designs. Or at the very least, I've gotten better at ripping off old design ideas in a less-blatant manner. Still, it's a neat cover, and well worth some space on your harddrive and/or wall. Porto58 - This one is a BAPOM original. See the attached (and quite rough) pencil sketch. Took about two weeks to do. Did I mention that I hate doing 'fine art' covers? But it's pretty much the only authentic way to go for pre-60s events... The cover painting was done in Painter 8, which aside from being a buggy, ill-designed piece of crap is also incredible in some ways, and often the only tool for the job. I just wish Adobe would add the relevant 'natural media' features to Photoshop, only, you know, correctly done - and then I could safely ignore Painter. But until then... Look at the poster and check out the brush textures in the wall, the trees, on the street and elsewhere. Neat stuff (if you're into brush textures), and hard to replicate with Photoshop. Those of you who've been hanging around this place for the last several years may be wondering why this new painting, and not that recreation of the 1960 Porto cover I did a ways back. According to Sergio, another team is also working on a version of Porto from Neri's original, and he wanted them to be able to use the 'real' 1960 cover. Or maybe he just wanted to put me to work. Who can tell? Cheers, --John Bradley Last edited by John Bradley : 23-11-2004 at 21:17. |

And you always said you can't handle "natural media".
The Porto pencil draft tells another story ... liar! I like both covers. Thanks John. Cheers YG |

The silhuettes on the Hondala cover look much better than those on the Mercedes one at least
Nice work

I'm sad to hear this - the Porto58 cover is absolutely stunning, one of the best BAPOM program covers ever. I'm tempted to print it on a t-shirt.

I mean, they're generally better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but in most cases one wouldn't confuse them with 'art' done by an actual 'artist'. I've got a book full of Michael Turner paintings, and frankly it's an offense to my world-view that I still haven't figured out how to do work of similar quality. I have no doubt that I eventually will, mind you. I have an exceedingly high opinion of my talents, an opinion that I'm able to blindly maintain in the face of any amount of contrary evidence, but hey, that's just me... In any event, I need to keep doing the occasional art cover until I'm finally satisfied with the results. (Porto58's okay, at best. My two favorites are Hockenheim and Magny'98 National, for what that's worth.) It's just that I know some of my 'graphic arts' covers are of 'pro' quality (see monza10k, dijon81, tsukuba), and I'm annoyed that the same cannot be said of the 'art' covers. But I digress!

This is absolutelly new to me Maybe some language misunderstanding I supose. BTW: I think Lilleto is refering to the fact that Mike Hawthorn won the 1958 World Championship "de facto" in Porto. After spuning his car in the last lap he was only able to put it working again, jumpstarting it in the oposite direction of the circuit, so he was disqualified losing his 6 points of the second place and the extra point for fastest lap. Stirling Moss came in his defense and argued with the marshals that, has Mike jumpstarted his car "over the side walk" it could not be considered to be in oposite direction "in the circuit". Stirling Moss was able to convince the marshals to change his mind so Mike Hawthorn got his seven points back..... Stirling Moss was second for the World title in 1958 with only ONE point less then Mike Hawthorn.... Now, this was REAL Sportsmanship !!!!!!!

And unlike my beloved (and even-more-expensive) Photoshop, it's not "worth every penny". --jhb Last edited by John Bradley : 23-11-2004 at 21:21. |
