Notepad Sydney to Melbourne. norbs' next challenge.

Well I have decided that after the weight loss challenge earlier in the year when I managed to raise over $700 I should try and do it again next year (March - April). Having told a few people about my plan and had looks ranging from shock to hysterics, I put it to you guys. I am planning to ride my pushbike, or a pushbike, from Sydney to Melbourne in 14 days.

Pause to let you recover

Yep, Sydney to Melbourne on my treadly. But Im not doing it for $700 this time. (Not discounting everyones contribution last time, but I need more incentive.) For our overseas lurkers, thats about 900 odd kms, but I want to take a few detours and make it an even 1000kms. Now I am not even sure I can make 1000kms yet, thus the early post. I have started my training today. And to give you a guide, I managed 17kms in 43 mins and feel ok.

Now obviously, doing the ride is going to be hard, but harder still is planning and orgaising it. So I am looking for some help. I am going to need some people to drive a support vehicle. Whether it is my car or a hired van is yet to be decided. I need people to help get me sponsorship. I need a hand planning the trip. Planning stops. Organising food and drinks. etc etc etc.

Also, would you guys be willing to sponsor me again? All the funds will go to the kids hospital. This year I wont do it unless I can guarantee individual receipts. Does anyone know people in bike shops who could help out with gear?

There are a thousand questions to be answered, but I think if I start early, I can pull this off and maybe make some serious cash, and get fit at the same time. Also, if you live on the way from Sydney to Melbourne, maybe I can ride through and say gday.

Also, anyone who can think of a way we can get overseas contributions, let me know. I can get RSC behind me.
What do you guys think?

Depending when you plan to do it, I'd love to be part of the support crew.

If it goes ahead, I'd be sponsoring for sure.

Unfortunately I'm getting short of cash these days but I'll certainly do what I can. Also, Canberra seems like an obvious detour so I'd be willing to help you out with food and accomodation and the like down here.

First things first. Approach a bicycle shop and see if you cant get a desent bike for the attempt. ie the shop supplies the bike, and gets a sponsership position on your ARSE.

Seconded approach hospitals and charaties with the idea, not only will the most likely set you in the right direction in terms of how to actually make this a goer, it will give you quite a bit of leverage when you approach other companies to get sponcership.

Approach radio stations, perhaps Smith can help you there.

Get a shyt load of petroliam jelly, Sadle Soreness is a bitch and could put an end to your attempt.
buy a shyt load of sunscreen (again I would be looking for a sponcership donation for this)
Train at a good constant pace rather than fast.
Don't just ride on the flat roads, attack some monster hills.
Get yourself some good gel gloves a ride that long will eventually numb your hands the gel gloves will reduces that.
look out for learner drivers backing out of driveways.

I remember a while ago Adam and Will on Triple J followed some dude who unicycled from Melbourne to Sydney I think. So doing a publicity stunt on the radio could definitely be a posibility.
Edit: err, I'm almost positive that made sense

Sydney - Melbourne. M5 - Hme hwy - Rememberance Drice =======>

I would definately be looking for media coverage. Radio and/or TV.

All the best for the Ride. Depending on when your due past, Ill try and make it out to the M5/Hume Hwy at the Narellan Road overpass.

That was actor Samuel Johnson. And he said he found it really hard to get money out of people. They raised a lot less than they planned. He was well pissed off. He said every town put on a BBQ, but he told them they should have donated that moeny to the cause instead. The Goulburn mayor gave him $10, and when he mentioned to someone what a tight ass he was, the bugger asked for it back LOL. Cheap prick.

Good stuff norbs - if anyone can do it, you can. I'll help in any way I can including sponsorship.

When you've got the idea firmed up in terms of route etc, we can put you on ABC radio and community stations around the country.

Thanks for the support guys.

Ox. Will have a timetable later in the year.
Mick, will see if I can swing thru Canberra.
Nige, thanks for that. I will approach a few bike shops up here and see what happens.
lobsang, Cliff can have that to himself.
Latch, Riggs and Smiss. Im not sure if I want to go to the media. Im sure it will help with donations, but I dont really want to much exposure. Will have a think about it though, cause every one is saying I should hook up with the media.
hankstar, ooohh, yeah. And a few ACDC tracks.

Ditto, just watch for Road Trains

Also a friend at work rode from Sydney to Melb a few years ago and said it was actually quite a nice ride, not to hilly and the roads are generally good
