Racer v0.6.1 for Windows released

A few patches for v0.6.0...

Get it at www.racer.nl/download/racer061.zip

Changes:
- Fixed 'too many network adapters' crashes
- Fixed smoke animation in replays
- Set shaders.enable=1 in distribution (accidentally at 0 in the previous release)
- Modified road noise amplitude; v0.6 switched to Simplex noise (not Perlin) and that was faster in frequency
- Added stats.show_wrong_direction setting to be able to turn off the wrong-direction indicator.
- Added stats.max_race_view to limit all the stat views that F1 loops through (not all are useful)
- Added Cg compile errors to QLOG.txt when a shader fails to compile
- Added car engine jitter parameters (see http://www.racer.nl/reference/carphys.htm#enginejitter) to control engine jitter when shifting
- Engine acc/dec mix slightly modified; it was pure throttle application, now accVol=throttle+0.2-brakes (limited to 0..1) (decVol=1-acc)
- Added dbg_car.simple_susp_live_rate_slope; when implicitly integrating the wheel position, the suspension rate slope was calculated incorrected.
Set to 1 for backwards compatible suspension physics, 0 for more realistic damping (used only when dbg_car.susp_implicit_integration=1)
- Added dbg_car.damp_vertical_velocity_reversal. Set to 1 for dampening wheel velocity reversal (sign change).
Perhaps more stable with hard dampers. Default=0 for backwards compatibility.
- Improved error messages when ini files have mismatching brackets ({ and }) (detection, line numbers)
- Track special.ini's gfx.clear_color has been made obsolete. It will always be 1 (no speed increase detected)
- Racer.ini had timing.slomo set to 10. Now set to 0 to give more fps.

that's nice... I noticed two things: smoke in the replays got normal and I've got like 5 to even 10 fps more now O_O THX Ruud!

Top man Ruud, sounds like some really good fixes in there

Do the ini error messages work in shaders too? The times I've nearly torn my hair out trying to find a missing comment or something keeping all the shaders underneath from working, would be great if it says where the problem is

Road noise is much better; AI is working good also, bracket checking is nice too the lobby server is still buggy for me. I'll test more later.
@-TiberiuS-; my first run shows all the missing brackets ini and shd with the line numbers a real nice improvement...

Cool, whatever you did to fix the smoke in replays fixed the CG in replays too
And the bracket checking and cg errors are very helpful!
Nice to see smoke in replays again

Excellent update, Ruud.
I appreciate the shader feedback now. I vote for this to be the next stable
release (instead of 0.5). I like the new parameters for the light flywheel effect.
No issues so far, just fun.

Modeller doesn't seem to work (double click, just doesn't load, older version works ok) (seems others are working ok, might try a reboot)

Road noise graph seems to have stopped working (still not working, g's work though, just the road noise one so far)

Liking the fixed suspension, I was wondering why my calculations were out, and how old versions had different CofG's when the suspension length readout was the same!? (not sure if this is damper bug related (rebound sucks cars down), but my excel car.ini sheet is now showing the right calculated CofG for inputted data )

Jitter looks good now we can define it per car. Any chance of blip and cut throttle per car rather than global?

Very nice update, I'm liking the fixes. but like Mr Whippy asked are you going to make it possible for us to set blip/cut throttle seperatly per car rather than globally?

Thanks for the quick update Ruud, there are some interesting changes in this version.

Maybe you can eloborate a bit on what exactly "suspension rate slope was calculated incorrected" means, what the difference to before effectively is for us? Similarly, "dampening wheel velocity reversal" is implemented how exactly?
Is there any news on a revised suspension system with .crv based springs and damping in sight?

The bracketing check seems to produce a "false alert" in cases where .ini and .shd files end with the last closing bracket, but don't have an empty line afterwards. Ie, I got error logs on cars that have correct bracketing and the messages disappeared after saving the files, pressing enter once after the last closing bracket. Irritatingly, the messages also disappeared after entering an additional, incorrect and obsolete closing bracket behind the otherwise correct tree structures.

From v0.6.0 on, the user's name which is displayed ingame was no longer controlled by the drivers\default file, but racer.ini - is this a permanent change? Nothing major of course, but it wasn't listed on any change logs.

Would it be possible to improve the current wheel collision being based on the contact patch alone, to something that uses the actual wheel model .dof file or the existing car.ini parameters for radius and width? This would greatly help with sudden extreme load changes on rough surfaces, sidewalks, staircases, rocks, etc.

DLing/copying over all the old car files now. just wondering, but in future releases, do you have any plan to allow for movable suspension, or would that require way more work than I realize? I would guess having an optional section in the .ini file that lets you tie the .dof for a suspension arm, axle, linkage, or something else like that to one point on the chassis (chassis end pivot), then tie the other end of that movable suspension piece to the wheel (in the case of a solid axle, twin-i-beam/TTB suspension, or just a lack of a .dof for a knuckle) or steering knuckle (for double wishbone independant suspension, most kinds of front suspension, or stuff of that nature), and have another optional shock mesh section where you can tie the .dof for a shock to one point on the chassis, one point on the suspension, and define how far the mesh can compress/extend (just squish the mesh for now, sorting out having one part slide into the other is something that can be saved for after the movable suspension gets sorted out). it sounds simple enough to configure in the car.ini, I just have no idea how difficult it would be to implement into the game itself. it would definitely make longer travel open wheel cars (old F1 cars, caterhams, some offroaders) look a lot more realistic when the suspension deflects

I don't get that white screen until all cars cross finish line, still can't see replay after white screen appears! Would like to make some races and save/view the replay!

The people that posted comment about how great the replays are must NOT be running a complete race!!!!!

Can't set 0 laps in menu, must be set in racer.ini!

The .shd and .ini files MUST have a blank line at end of file, or you get:
Qlog error: " brackets don't match; still 1 closing bracket(s) expected at end of file."
I guess an "end of file" character isn't good enough!

This was also noted by Cosmo!

We now have a "Wrong way" flag that pops up when going the reverse direction on a track!

Carlswood track camera view "C" shows white sky below skybox!

There are a lot of audio files missing and the car engine sound and skid sound is still TOOO LOUD!!!

Qlog errors:
[racer/2552] WARN: RAudioSample: Can't load sample 'data/cars/formcar/gearwhine.wav'
Reason: audio file missing!


For those that would like to see this version made a final version I say no way.
There are still too many bugs that need to be fixed, espescially the damned white screen and blackening where I can't do a replay after running a race!!!!!!!!!

Please try to keep Ruud focused, he does a great job for us but stray's off no and then.

An idea for track splines. If we are stuck with using splines for the driving surface, and perlin noise for surface detail, what about being able to have bent or curved splines?
Define a spline same as currently but allow fo setting a positive or negative 'amplitude' or 'y' offset, and maybe a variable to set where on the length of the spline the peak is. Be able to set this per spline.
Basically, produce a half sine/curve that starts and ends on the spline start/end points, and the peak or amplitude of the sine is the y offset. being able to set the position of the sinewave centre on te spline would be excellent.
this would allow a simple way of having cambered roads and other uneven splined surfaces instead of the flatness we get now, have backward compatibility with older tracks (they just stay flat as they were), and be fairly simple to design for.

Clearly Ruud isn't running a full race if he isn't spotting this glaring mistake on the replay side of thing

Fortunately for me I never actually run a race anyway to notice this, as I'm sure many other don't. So it seems ironic that a feature added to help those that do run actual races, a feature that is being pushed, actually loose out with masked out replays at the end.

I'd say if any single one thing was fixed it was this. Have a free drive/race toggle button in the menu's, and a lap selector. Having to go digging in racer.ini isn't ideal, get the replays after a full race working and at least you have a release everyone should be able to enjoy from start to finish and use all the features.

Boomer: Haven't had time to play with 0.61 yet (I'm slipping ) but:

'Wrong way' arrow can now be turned off.

About the sounds issue, they've been fine over here in the latest betas. I think the problem is the way Ruud's change the acc/decel soundset mixing, it makes some cars too loud at part throttle when both sets are playing and it clips (distorts), turning the master volume down a bit cures it for the short term. Not really Ruud's fault after all, just that most cars need the decel sounds turned down a bit to work properly now. Haven't noticed a problem with the skid sounds though, even with master volume at max.

About the replays, I rarely ever use replays so never noticed this, I'll try one later.

Skybox on Carlswood doesn't reach down low enough, I remember getting the hall of mirrors effect long ago on one of the track cams. At least this feature would make some outdated tracks driveable, clear_color never worked for some of us on some tracks.

I'm interested about the wheel velocity damping, would this be an attempt to stop the ping-pong explosive physics we sometimes get on really stiffly sprung cars?

I dont usually complain, but this last beta has serius issues!
FPS is now horrable compared to before.

I get 60 at carlswood with a Nvidia 9600gt card....
The tarmac on Forest club track are now grass...
cars are suddenly missing textures
skyboxes on tracks have disapeared

Did I mention the low FPS..
