That old isometric pirate galleon game!
help, i can't remember the name!
i guess i played it in about 1995/1996 or something around that. it is a game with 2 pirate galleons that shoot each other with their cannons (using either the larboard or the starboard ones). the POV was an isometric one like in simcity. you could play against one human or against the computer. there was also wind that changed its direction so that affected the movement possibilities of your (sailing) ship. i would be glad if anybody remembered this one.

Heh, I managed to figure out where your avatar came from (Jagged alliance), but I never played this galleon "sim"... Sorry
Was it kind of semi-sim ish, or fully arcade? Was it a budget title, shareware, regular commercial title? Did it have any 3d acceleration (eg glide or so)? ... was it a PC title even BTW? Doesnt ring a bell for me though

thanks for trying to help, Roger!
i should have thought of more infos about the game, sorry for being so imprecise: i played it on a PC. it was fully arcade, just shooting at each other. i can't remember exactly but i think it was shareware, at least not freeware (i think). it had no 3D acceleration, not at all. i think at that time there were no 3D accelerated games. i dunno when 3D accelerated graphics cards were introduced (although i bought one of the first cards ) so maybe it could have been before 1995/1996.

Just a guess, but are you thinking of Shipwreckers? That was a 3d pirate ship game that was 3d, but came out before everything was goin 3d accelerated. I never played it myself but it seems to match your description. It was a full game released by Psygnosis, Im sure there was a demo though, you could probably still find it somewhere online.

Hmm, I was thinking about that Psygnosis game too, but wasnt it a bit more elaborate than just two ships shooting at each other?
(and I couldnt remember the name either so I couldnt find it.. Good search superkart )

thanks for the guess, unfortunately that's not the game i meant.
the one i'm looking for was (as roger suspected) not very complex at all. just galleons, cannons and wind.

I can only think of 3 things, "Pirates" / "Pirates Gold", or "Rampart" where you built fortresses an placed cannons then defended them against invading ships (a game by the West Brothers I think?), and a section of monkey island 3 which is much like you describe.
A good place for old forgotten games is here: http://www.the-underdogs.org/ there's even an option to seach for games with a naval theme. |

i can say that it is not Pirates, Pirates Gold or Rampart. the one i am looking for is much simpler and more arcade style. and it didn't have anything to do with mainland, it was played on the open sea only.
i know "the underdogs", and i also tried the naval theme and many others. i searched pretty much the whole page in many subsections and using the sort option by year and rating and stuff - i had no luck. LWing, an RSC forum member, and i talked via IM about that game and it seems like he has played the very same game that i mean some years ago with a friend. the downside is: since he hasn't played it much, he doesn't remember the name either and unfortunately he has no contact to that guy any more. thanks for the help anyway, ian.

Age of Sail looks pretty close to it! (-> screenshots) though i'm pretty sure that the one i mean was a DOS game. neverthelsee i'll try the demo of Age of Sail. thanks!
EDIT: played the demo, it's more a simulation. the one i mean is arcade style all the way.

Hmmm... although this game is for WinDoZe, could you possibly be refering to Popcap's "Seven Seas"?

nice little game, Rich. but the one i'm looking for had real-time gameplay, i.e. no gameplay based on rounds.

Hey,
I just remembered a game called 'Overboard'. It was a game where pirate ships fighting against each other just as you said... Farewell...

i checked out some screenshots but Overboard is too 'new', such 3D graphics (even if not 3D hardware accelerated) weren't used at the time of the game i'm searching for.
thanks for the guess anyway!

aaowas
You aren't referring to The Ancient Art of War at Sea, but it is ALSO a GREAT iso-pirate-type game.
It had a psuedo-2D overhead map view for moving your ships around, then switched to the iso-view for close encounters/battles. The dos version blew when compared to the mac version. Would still like to get a copy for the mac and get it up-and-running on a mac emulator. google gemulator, basilisk, or mac emulator (emulation) if interested. I don't think this is the game you're thinking of because i don't remember 2-player capability (although it may have it, it's been a while). At any rate, it's an awesome game(awesome in terms of a 'classic, simple, FUN' computer game from the late 80's). http://apple2forever.free.fr/Origin...Sea%20Verso.jpg http://website.lineone.net/~terriro...war_at_sea.html Last edited by drippy : 04-03-2004 at 20:54. |

yeah as you say, that's not the one i meant. too bad. "The Ancient Art of War at Sea" is from 1987, the one i'm looking for is not that old.
